Willow is a wonderful, sustainable and robust material that can be used to create objects that are both beautiful and useful.
In July 2023 I created a Willow Craft Garden as a show feature at RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, highlighting the ways that willow can be used in the garden, in many cases replacing plastic and other materials with a high carbon footprint.
In the early 2000s, whilst researching ways to deal with a boggy patch on our field, I came across the varying uses of willow in the prevention of land erosion due to surface water flow. Further investigation led me to Wally's Willows in the Lake District. After a very informative phone call with the owner, the characterful Walter Lloyd, I was duly sent a bundle of cuttings, along with a book and a variety of Walters photocopied hand written and printed notes. Those cuttings were the first willows planted here in 2006. Originally as a way to make use of a boggy patch on the field. I quickly discovered its many uses including building living willow structures, fedges, feeding the sheep, making wreaths and all manner of woven items.
Rods are used mainly in my creations and workshops and cuttings are available in season - usually December until the end of February.
As well as cut willow, I also grow and sell a range of potted willows and potted woven willow trees ready to be planted in gardens of homes, businesses, schools etc.
I also offer a range of my basketry items on a wholesale basis to independent florists, gift shops, garden centres etc.
